Dissertation project: References

It is very important that you acknowledge any of the work of others that you use or adapt in your own work, or that provides the essential background or context to your dissertation. The use of references is the standard way to do this.

References should be listed after the conclusions chapter and before the appendices. Start a new page with the title 'References'. In the main body of text, they may be referred to in one of the following ways:

...some early work by Brooks (1975) suggests that throwing men at a problem is counter-productive... or ...some early work (Brooks, 1975) suggests that throwing men at a problem is counter-productive...;
Early work in this area [1, 9, 12] shows that...;

In the references, each citation would be listed in the relevant format. The first style leads to an alphabetically ordered list:

Brooks, F.P. (1975), The Mythical Man Month: Essays on Software Engineering, Addison-Wesley.
Pickle, X.X.X. and H.O.T. Chilli (2001), "Very strong pickles", Department of Pickling Technical Report CS-01-07, University of Pickling, UK.
Pickle, X.X.X. and H.O.T. Chilli (2002a), "Very strong pickles", Journal for pickling, 15:7, pp. 101-7.
Pickle, X.X.X. and H.O.T. Chilli (2002b), "Very, very strong pickles", Journal for pickling, 15:8, pp. 91-8.

The second style leads to a list ordered by first occurence of the reference in the main text

1    Brooks, F.P. (1975), The Mythical Man Month: Essays on Software Engineering, Addison-Wesley.
2...
15   Pickle, X.X.X. and H.O.T. Chilli (2002), "Very strong pickles", Journal for pickling, 15:7, pp. 101-7.

Whichever technique you decide to use, be consistent. It is fine to use URLs in references, and it is good practice to include a "last date visited" field for these. Remember that the point of the references list is to enable a reader to locate those works you have referred to in a library, so make sure you include all relevant information: for a journal this would include author, title, year, journal title, volume, pages; for a book this includes author, title, year, publisher.
