Your supervisor will usually be the person who offered
the project you have been allocated. However, in some
circumstances you may be allocated a different supervisor,
e.g. due to illness, and you should check this as soon as
possible when you return for your third year of studies.
Your supervisor will also act as your personal tutor for
your third year as an undergraduate.
It is a formal requirement that you regularly meet with
your project supervisor during semesters 1 and 2 of your
third year. You should agree a timetable with your
supervisor at the start of each semester. Typically, you
should expect to meet with your supervisor for about half
an hour per week. Some supervisors will want to meet with
you more often than this, and it may be that you will need
to meet for longer near the start of the project when it
is being defined.
You should be prepared for meetings with your
supervisor. Bring along results to discuss and questions
to explore. If your supervisor requests it, you may also
have to regularly submit short reports on your project
work, usually by email. These reports should record the
main milestones of the project, discussing both successes
and failures. You are encouraged to keep a web-based diary
of work on your project and to e-mail the URL to your
supervisor. Note that your supervisor will be continuously assessing your
work on the project.
It goes without saying (so here it is in writing) that
you must keep backup copies of your work, e.g. perhaps
give a disk containing a backup copy of all your work to
your supervisor at meetings. Any loss of information due
to failure of your computing equipment is not the
Department's responsibility, and will not be considered
grounds for extending the project hand-in deadline.
Failure to arrange and attend regular meetings with your
supervisor will be taken very seriously by the department.
If you cannot contact your supervisor to arrange a meeting
you should contact the
Project Officer instead unless he is your
supervisor. In that case you should contact the
Director of Teaching.
