Sensor Based Performance Analysis Mobile Application for Karting

Supervised by F.Ciravegna

Abstract

Karting is a motorsport which most adults in the UK will have experienced at some level. It is a popular activity for corporate team-bonding sessions, birthday parties, stag do’s and other social events, however – as with any activity – karting is something which can be experienced at more competitive levels. Having experienced a higher level of karting in the BUKC (British Universities Karting Championship), I understand the importance of the ability to analyse performance for a driver (with the aim of improving).

My project is an application for an android smartphone aimed at helping drivers with this analysis, by gathering, processing, storing and displaying relevant data about cornering, acceleration, braking and other driving-related fields. Using multiple techniques and system components, I deliver an interface which allows users to evaluate their performance to a greater degree than they can get from simply analysing lap times or video footage, with an aim of improving the overall performance (lap times) of the user.
