Mapping the Uncharted

Supervised by F.Ciravegna

Abstract

Geographic Information Systems and its underlying spatial data infrastructure are matured enough to map the majority of the world. But, most of the developing countries are still facing challenges in locating landscape and  inhabitants. However, existing maps provide a very high level of mapping details which fail to guide government and decision makers for the betterment of the urban population. This report briefly introduces the background information about various approaches involved in mapping geographic locations and it is found that Global Position System Technology is very efficient in providing location information. The main purpose of this project is to develop an android mobile application by taking advantages of Global Positioning System Technology, thereby enabling people to geographically locate their urban area with a collaborative effort. The application is able to follow the user routes and record GPS location data, and eventually using the location data to create a map. The application also provides an interface to view the maps and share map data in a standard geographic data format. The application is written in C# programming language using Xamarin  Studio cross-platform development IDE.
