A Tool for Marking Dissertations

Abstract

Many students are doing their degrees with a final dissertation and the marking process is an annual challenge for the academic staff. The dissertation project is an important part of any educational institute in which most of the word being done manually. The process of marking dissertation involves uploading/downloading dissertation, deadline notification, giving the mark/comment, discussion, allocating mediator, viewing results etc. Markers also need to give marks according to different criteria. Some personal details should also be recorded and managed in the process. It is difficult for staffs and students to handle smoothly.

The project aims to develop a tool for marking dissertations which provides a convenient and robust platform for the staff and the student to manage personal and dissertation information and achieve the marking and discussion process. Personal information and dissertation marking carry a substantial part of this project. The administrator, the student, the supervisor, the second marker, the mediator and the examiner are the users involved in the system. The software is mainly based on the Eclipse and MySQL database to achieve these functions.
