Augmented Reality in the Diamond

Supervised by S.Maddock

Abstract

The concept of Augmented Reality (AR) has been around since the 1970’s but it hasn't been possible until recently to create widely accessible commercial AR applications. Using the popular spread of smart devices, AR can be used to enhance our perception of the world.

The aim of this project is to develop a mobile application for an interactive AR art exhibit, centred about the Diamond building displaying artistic virtual objects that explore different AR techniques. The application intends to enhance visitor experiences, bringing the Diamond building to life in an interactive manner.

A successful Android app has been developed and can be used whilst walking around the Diamond to observe several stationary, animated and interactive pieces. There is room for improvement in respect to creating a more rounded complete app, but the AR functionality which it set out to explore in the Diamond has been successful.
