A System for Monitoring Air Pollution in Cities

Supervised by G.Struth

Abstract

Urban air pollution has become a global problem that directly impacts on environment and human health. Therefore, it is a necessity for monitoring air pollution. Monitoring air pollutants is a reliable and precise way to assess the impact of air pollution. Currently, air pollution is monitored by fixed and costly stations with high accuracy, which are operated by the local government. The public can only access and obtain air quality information of what the government has received from the monitoring stations.

In this thesis, this project is designed to monitor concentrations of air pollutants in a compact and cost effective but relatively accurate way, and present the results of monitoring by developing an iOS  application. The monitoring air pollution system aims to allow general public to measure the air pollution by themselves as well as increase their awareness of current environment conditions and take corresponding actions towards the air pollution.

The application developed is able to fetch data from the proposed monitoring system, and then to display real-time air quality information by bar chart and map.
