For some years it has been the practice in this
department that the archive copies of undergraduate and
MSc project dissertations are the electronic versions, and
so there is no requirement for the paper copies that are
handed in to be formally bound. Instead, it is sufficient
for each copy to be stapled together, with a standard
department cover sheet as the front sheet.
On the other hand, some students do wish to produce a
bound copy for their own use, as a record of the work done
during the project that they can then show to others (such
as potential employers, for instance). If you want to make
a bound copy of your dissertation for this sort of reason,
then you can of course do so, and you can either have this
done before you hand in the dissertation, so that the
bound copy is one of the ones that you submit, or you can
wait until after it has been examined and then have a copy
bound. In either case
you have a choice of two approaches for getting a copy
bound.
- Use the University's Binding Service, which is
provided by the Print Unit. See their web
pages for details: recommended styles are either
the Thesis binding style T2 (not T1, as this copy is not
going to be deposited in the library), or, if you have
laid out your title page carefully so that it will look
good, the Standard binding with a clear front cover and
a black heavy card back.
- Use a private binding service.
Note that, whichever approach you use, you will need to
arrange the binding well before the date when you require
the bound dissertation, as some places may not be able to
complete the binding process for a number of days.
