SOME RELEVANT RECENT NEWS

  1. •The University of Sheffield has been has been named University of the Year in the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards.

  2. •Science Foundation Ireland has invited me as reviewer for the midterm scientific review of DERI, the largest semantic web and web science research centre in the world.

  3. •IDA, the Irish Development Agency has invited me as reviewer of the Bell Labs Ireland research centre.

  4. •Our paper: “A Methodology towards Effective and Efficient Manual Document Annotation: Addressing Annotator Discrepancy and Annotation Quality” was shortlisted among the best papers at the 17th International Conference on Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management  (EKAW 2010), Lisbon, Portugal, 11-15 October 2010.

  5. •The Times Higher Education writes that the students in the Department of Computer Science of the University of Sheffield “are all unanimously satisfied with their course”, i.e. we “had a 100 per cent satisfaction rating”.


PROJECTS NEWS

  1. •Our proposal “WeSenseIt” on creating Citizen Observatories for the water cycle using social and physical sensors has been invited for negotiation by the European COmmission (€5.5m, I am the project director), May 2012.

  2. •New EPSRC project funded: RAnDMS (Real time Analysis of Digital Media Streams), starting in May 2012

  3. •New project funded by the Medical Research Council “Time to change! Using the transition from school to university to promote healthy lifestyle habits in young people”, starting in April 2012.

  4. •Project: Tracking Real-time Intelligence in Data Streams (TRIDS), £100k funding by Technology Strategy Board and SBRI as part of the call “Have I Got 'Views' For You?”, May 2011

  5. •New project “Business Intelligence for Learning About Our Students” funded by JISC (principal investigator is Dr Simon Tucker, I am Co-I), £50k, January 2011.

  6. •New Project: Big Energy Upgrade, ERDF funds. Our group works on providing feedback on house energy consumption based on smart meters, April 2011- April 2013.
